Students testify for universal school meals

“The House Committee on Education heard testimony from two Essex High School students Wednesday.

“The equality piece is supper important, because although there are some families that get financial support, not all families that need it, get it because they’re not part of a certain category,” student Emma Renaud said.

Many families utilized the prior income-based free meal program in Rutland and while Rep. Larry Cupoli appreciates the bill, he doesn’t support paying for it through the Education Fund.

“I think the big issue is it goes to property taxpayers. And you know, we’re stretching, in many communities in particularly mine,” Cupoli said.

Hunger Free Vermont, an advocate for S.100, said meals should be funded through the education fund.”
